Each and every wine in the Wine Angel portfolio has finesse, good acidity and balance. Too often the Australian wines that are exported to the United States are high in alcohol and without enough acidity to reward patience; you would be surprised how few wine like this are actually consumed or rated highly in Australia! For some reason, many US wine importers assume that Americans will enjoy wines that are the equivalent of Wonderbread. What a shame that is. American consumers are much more discerning than these importers believe them to be. Australia is about much more than the blockbuster reds of the Barossa Valley and McLarenvale. Note that not every wine from these regions is a blockbuster: the Eden Valley in the Barossa and the Willunga Hills in McLarenvale are regions that can produce wines with great elegance and a structure that rewards cellaring. There are now over 100 recognized Geographic wine regions in Australia and they all have something distinct and interesting to offer wine lovers. The Wine Angel portoflio has sought out more than 70 wines that, no matter which region in Australia they are from, exhibit finesse, good acidity and balance. This can be hard to do in the warmer regions of Australia; it took Wine Angel many years to find the right wines from the McLarenvale and Clare Valley regions; it was not until Michele Anderson met two of Australia's leading winemakers, Walter Clappis and David O'Leary, that she could round out the Wine Angel portfolio to include South Australian wine regions. Walter and David have partnered with Wine Angel to bring The Hedonist and The Brave in to the portfolio. In addition, both of the Mirrabooka reds are now made with fruit from the cooler Eden Valley part of the Barossa region and they too deliver elegance and finesse in combination with bright fruit characters. The Hedonist range also brings the first Biodynamic wines to the Wine Angel Portoflio. Due to climatic conditions such as humidity, it is not always possible to grow top quality grapes without the selective use of herbicide and fungicide. The warm, dry climate in the McLarenvale has helped Walter to be one of the first Australian biodynamic viticulturalists; and the wines are even better when made following these principles. Wine Angel will continue to seek out further partners like Walter. The Poole's Rock, Cockfighter's Ghost and Firestick vineyards are all pesticide-free, which is another important sustainability initiative that will become an increasingly important part of the Wine Angel portfolio. Finally, the Adjenda range is owned and made by people who care more about preserving our planet for future generations than anyone else that Michele knows. Former Australian Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Hill, who is one of the Adjenda owners, gives more of his time to helping make Australia a more energy efficient and resource thoughtful country than any other Australian citizen. Michele Anderson believes that the other important component to making great wine is being independent and entrepreneurial. Through her larger corporate experiences in the wine business she has seen 'managers' cut too many corners and kill brands in order to reach volume targets because they have such short term and self-serving goals. All of the Wine Angel wines come from independent and patient limited production wineries that are dedicated to putting quality first and to building world class brands. We encourage you to include the Wine Angel wines in your lifelong journey getting to know and love Australian wines. Details about all of the wines are available from the Winery pages and detailed tasting and winemaking notes and shelf talkers are available from the Trade Tools page. |
